Spring Exhibition #2 | The 4th Chair Project
Friday, April 4th through Sunday, May 4th
Curated by Heather Carter & Jules Buck Jones
The second spring exhibition, The 4th Chair Project, showcases a select group of artists invited to create a “chair” or other work that reflects, symbolizes, or conjures a “chair”.
The 4th Chair Project was an idea born from the construction of 4 sculptural chairs that projectART designed with their practicum student last Spring. After setting up 3 chairs in the front patio of ARTSPACE, there wasn’t enough space for the 4th chair to be displayed. Students and patrons then began to inquire, “Where’s the 4th chair?”
It occurred to projectART board members that the absence of the 4th chair is a metaphor for the absence of robust art programs in the public school system. projectART was created to fill this absence, using its classes and programming to fulfill its mission to make more creative opportunities available for the youth of Wimberley. In short, projectART IS the 4th chair, and The 4th Chair Project encapsulates this idea.
For this particular exhibition, ARTSPACE invited area artists to create a chair, a 4th chair, to symbolize the missing piece of today’s public school system – ART. Their creations are two- and three-dimensional, functional and not, literal and abstract.
The 4th Chair Project exhibiting artists are Lance Letscher, McKay Otto, Austin Weeks, Gary Weeks, Andy Rihn, Jennifer Moore, Andy Coolquit, Hollis Hammonds, Beau James, Heather Carter and Emmett Cole.
ARTSPACE is a mixed-use arts education and gallery space, owned and operated by projectART Wimberley, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit with a mission to “support art education and provide creative opportunities for area students”.
